This week's Healthy Advice will focus on yeast overgrowth (Candida). The delicate balance of yeast throughout the body can be easily disrupted. Some of the many causes include:
- Antibiotics kill all bacteria including the "friendly bacteria" in the intestinal tract which normally helps to keep Candida under control.
- Intestinal parasites and worms also destroy friendly bacteria in the gut.
- Inadequate immune function caused by a number of diseases such as cancer and AIDS.
- Hormonal imbalances caused by pregnancy, birth control pills and thyroid disease.
- Excessive stress.
- Toxic metals and chemicals such as chlorine found in tap water, MSG, aspartame, and even mercury found in dental fillings can alter immune response and allow yeast to proliferate.
How do you know if you have yeast overgrowth?
Symptoms of yeast overgrowth include a wide range of problems. Candida overgrowth causes toxins to be released which may cause many conditions such as; gastrointestinal problems, bad breath, bloating, coating on the tongue, and gas; allergic reactions such as hayfever, earaches, hives, dermatitis, dry skin, eczema, psoriasis; as well as bladder infections, vaginitis, and fluid retention.
What can be done to rid the body of Candida?
- A nutritious diet with fresh raw vegetables. Avoiding refined, processed foods, tobacco, alcohol, caffeine, sugar, artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated fats and vinegar.
- Exercise regularly. Exercise strengthens the immune system and increased breathing will give you more energy.
